Oral Yeast Infection
What is Oral Yeast Infection?

Oral yeast infection, also called thrush or oropharyngeal Candidiasis, includes gastrointestinal yeast infections and intestinal yeast infections and is caused by the yeast Candida, also called Monilia Albicans. The organism infects the mouth and throat by invading tissues, by producing potent toxins and by inducing a hypersensitive state.

Oral yeast infection may appear on the inside of the cheeks, on the roof of the mouth, on the tongue, on the gums and on the lips. The most common symptom of oral yeast infection is having white patches inside the mouth, when trying to wipe them away, the area may bleed and leave a painful ulcer behind.

The Causes to Oral Yeast Infection
  • Women who use birth control pills are less resistant to Candida overgrowth and therefore, to oral yeast infection.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants can cause a flow of salivary, which can lead to oral yeast infection.
  • Antibiotics which are being used for long periods of time can vanish the good bacteria in the crotch, making it easy for the yeast to take over the area.
The Symptoms to Oral Yeast Infection
  • A smooth creamy white or yellow coating on the oral surface and under the surface there is a red bleeding tissue (ulcer)
  • Red, peeling patches, especially on the palate and tongue
  • Red cracks at the corners of the mouth, usually covered by a pseudo membrane
  • Feeling of burning or pain
Oral Yeast Infection in Children
  • If your infant suffers from reappearing oral yeast infection, it may point to other immune system problems, especially if he has other medical problems as well. In older children, oral yeast infection can be a sign of diabetes, especially if they hadn’t taken any antibiotics lately.
  • Make sure you change the nipples of your baby’s bottle frequently to prevent the reappearing of the yeast infection. Overusing the same nipples may cause his mouth to be overly moist, and easily leas to yeast infection, due to the fact that yeast overgrow in areas of moisture.
  • If you breastfeed your baby and your baby is suffering from yeast infection, your nipples and breasts cay get infected, and cause a lot of pain during breastfeeding.
  • Babies put almost everything in their mouth as a part of their development, so it’s very important to throw away the toys and objects your baby is putting in his mouth while having a yeast infection.
