What is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

A vaginal yeast infection, also called monilial vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis, is caused due to irritation of the vulva (the vagina and the area around it). 75% of all women are likely to have vaginal yeast infection at least once during their lifetime.

It's normal for women to have certain amounts of yeast in the vagina, but when the balance is broken, and the amount of yeast start to overgrow and lead to vaginal yeast infection.

Vaginal Yeast Infection during Pregnancy

During the pregnancy a woman’s body is going through a lot of changes, especially in the second trimester of the pregnancy, these changes break the balance of acid and yeast in the vagina, leading to yeast overgrowth which eventually causes a vaginal yeast infection.

The pregnant yeast infection symptoms are similar to other infections, so being examined by your doctor is very important. Your doctor will take a sample of your vaginal discharge to confirm whether you have a yeast infection or not. The examination is very quick and painless, and will assure you will get the right treatment you need.  

Can the Yeast Infection Pass On to My Baby?

If left untreated, the yeast infection may pass on to your baby during the delivery, and cause a yeast infection in his mouth, or in the medical term, may cause a “thrush” which can be easily cured with an antifungal drug called Nystatin.

The yeast infection is not dangerous to your baby, and can be easily treated. besides, babies can get yeast infection even if you don't suffer form yeast infection.

How Can I Prevent a Vaginal Yeast Infection in the Future?
  • Wear loosened clothes, use cotton underwear
  • Wipe from front to back after using the toilet
  • Eat yogurt with good bacteria of Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Dry your vaginal area properly after taking a shower
  • Limit the amounts of sugar in your food and drinks
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent your immune system from getting weaken
