What is Yeast Infection?

The yeast organism which causes a yeast infection or thrush is actually a fungus, or in its scientifically name: Candidiasis. The general Candida yeast infection symptoms are similar.

The person usually experience irritation and swelling of the infected area, however, each type of yeast infection may also have unique symptoms.

Some yeast infections can appear in a superficial, for example: oral yeast infection or vaginal yeast infection, but it can also appear in a life-threatening way, for example: systemic yeast infection.

People have yeast in normal amounts on the skin and in areas of moisture such as the mouth and the vagina. In fact, between 20%-50% of the healthy women have yeast in the vaginal area.

In a healthy body, yeast is under control with a normal balance of intestinal flora, but that balance can be interrupt due to several factors which disrupt that balance, lead to yeast overgrowth, and then to infection.

Yeast infections can cause inconvenience, rarely cause serious health problems.

Prevent Reoccurring Yeast Infection

You can help prevent your yeast infection from reoccurring by adapting a healthy lifestyle:

  • Do not eat a lot of sweet, because the yeast use the sugar to overgrow
  • Do not wear tight cloths, and wear only cotton underwear 
  • Avoid products which contain wheat or corn
  • Try not to use antibiotics
  • Decrease your alcohol consumption

Yeast Infection Causes

The main factors which can lead to yeast infection are:

  • Stress
  • Antibiotics
  • Diabetes
  • Birth control pills
  • High levels of acid
  • Hormonal changes
  • Extended use of antibiotics or steroids
